----- Part 4 – Consummated -----
– Written by “Irene Naridza” and
“Gale Kepler”
Everyone in
the open-air hall turned to find the origin of that male voice that had spoken.
The gazes quickly found a man entering with firm steps, accompanied by three
others.
The man was
wearing a red shirt that stood out against his black jacket and a short
haircut. "Who will love you like I do? Sweet
thing, by getting married, you’ll take my life away." The man kept his intense gaze fixed on one of the
brides.
"Wait
a moment, holy sister. Don't allow this mistake. Pause this wedding, and I’ll
explain my reasons and who I am…" The man sang these phrases with a firm voice,
maintaining perfect harmony. "Let that fool at
the altar hear me…" The man
stopped dead in his tracks when he saw two brides standing at the altar.
He and his
three companions looked around. "Where’s the
groom?" he asked. If he was
confused, the guests were even more so. "Excuse
me, are you lost?" Mercedes asked, still in disbelief.
"Hello
everyone, my name is Romeo" he said in a cheerful tone. "This might
sound silly, but… this isn’t Serena Cajamarca’s wedding, right?" The guests couldn’t believe what they were hearing. "No, YOU IDIOT!" Nadia
was clearly upset.
"That’s over at Saint Veronica’s Church."
she pointed to her left
toward some imaginary location. Romeo’s face turned bright red with
embarrassment. "My apologies, ma’am. I made a
terrible mistake." he said, utterly mortified as he and his
companions began to leave.
"Congratulations on your wedding!" one of his companions said. "May you be happy forever, ladies!"
Romeo added before speeding up. "Hurry, guys,
that church is on the northwest side of town!" And as quickly
as they came, they were gone.
Everyone,
even the other bride and the officiant, was completely bewildered. "What was
that all about?" asked the officiant. "Just a jilted singer. Nothing serious. LET'S GET
ON WITH THE WEDDING!" Still surprised, and with some guests scratching their heads
at the bizarre event, the wedding continued.
The
officiant cleared her throat. "If there’s anyone present who believes this marriage
should not take place, speak now or forever hold your peace." she
repeated the question, which was met with absolute silence. "Very
well. Since there are no objections, Lurdes, Nadia, I now pronounce you… wife
and wife. You may kiss the bride."
It was
done. Both women were finally married, finally fulfilling what they had
promised each other for so many years.
Lurdes
cupped Nadia’s cheeks and drew her in for a long kiss, which was met with
applause from all the guests. Dozens of flashes filled the air as cameras
captured that stellar moment, immortalizing it.
"LONG LIVE THE BRIDES!" Mercedes shouted, followed by a great cheer.
Cecilia tried to move her wheelchair, but when she couldn’t, Adelaida helped
her, pushing her closer to her mother, who had come down from the altar to
embrace her daughter. Nadia did the same, planting a kiss on her forehead.
There was a
round of hugs and handshakes with the brides, from all those who accepted the
invitation to recognize the love between these two women. Adelaida noticed that
most of them were colleagues from work, judging by the way they spoke to each
other.
It was time
to throw the bouquet. It was a bouquet of white and yellow flowers. Several
women gathered in front of the altar, including Adelaida. Lurdes turned her
back to them and, without hesitation, tossed the bouquet. The women scrambled
to catch it, with one leaping up and grabbing it in midair, clutching it
tightly.
The one who
caught the wedding bouquet was a dark-skinned woman wearing a dark blue dress.
The others congratulated her warmly. "Thank
you, ladies. Lurdes, Nadia, you’ll be my maids of honor when I get married." she promised. "Thank
you, Brittany. We’ll be there." the brides replied.
What
followed was a long photo session. Everyone wanted a picture with the brides,
including Adelaida. She waited her turn; first came the close family, then
their friends, and finally, the other guests. She posed for a couple of photos
with the brides and their daughter. She also took one where she posed with Domenica.
"You're Cecilia's new friend, aren’t you?" Lurdes started a conversation with
Adelaida. "Yes, we met today. Your daughter
is very kind." Adelaida
replied, causing Lurdes to smile. "I’ve never seen you before. It’s a pleasure to meet you."
the newlywed extended her hand to the little girl.
"Oh, yes, it’s because I’m my Aunt Mercedes’ distant niece," Adelaida said, shaking her hand with
a small grip. She did the same with the other bride. "Are we making you uncomfortable?" Lurdes asked. "Uh… no. Not at all," Adelaida
responded. "If you truly love each other,
then I suppose your union is right." She concluded.
"Aww, thank you, sweetheart. You’re such a darling." Nadia felt moved by the little
girl’s acceptance, making her feel safe. She gave Adelaida a warm, rather long
hug as a gesture of gratitude. Adelaida felt a bit strange but enjoyed the
gesture.
Next came a
small banquet, also held outdoors. The couple and their daughter sat in a
special area of the table while several of the guests helped serve the food.
They had
rice with chicken stew. Wine was served for the adults and orange juice for the
three little ones. Lurdes made sure all three girls sat together, one beside
the other. They chatted amongst themselves, laughing during lunch.
They talked
a lot about the comic book they had read earlier and how excited they were for
the next issue.
The rest of
the women also engaged in lively conversations on various topics, not just
about how well the wedding had gone, but also about significant events in their
lives and how this moment would join those cherished memories they would
treasure dearly.
