It was
a Saturday, and Lorena was alone at home with her son Carl. Her husband and
daughter were away visiting the grandparents. Carl couldn’t go because he had a
pretty bad fever, but since they didn’t want to leave Grandpa alone on his
birthday.
They
decided to split up the duties. In the end, it turned out the fever wasn’t
serious. By Saturday afternoon, Carl was already healthy. He regretted the
misunderstanding, but there was nothing to be done, the grandparents lived far
away.
He and
his mother planned to go play in a nearby park, but an unexpected storm forced
them to return home. To make matters worse, the strong wind had knocked down
the TV antenna, leaving them without their main source of entertainment until
Dad could fix it.
Still
wanting to have fun with her son, Lorena suggested something. “Carl, do you want to play
something fun?” she asked, piquing her son’s curiosity. “You know, when I was alone
with your older sister, we used to play dress-up, where I’d dress her like a
little doll. Want to try it?”
The
question surprised Carl. “Mom, I’m a boy. That’s way too girly.” he
immediately refused. “Besides, Dad doesn’t even like me wearing anything pink. What would he
say if he saw me dressed like a doll?”
he added.
“That’s why he won’t know.
It’ll be our secret. Want to try it?” The
new proposition was quite tempting to Carl, who eventually agreed.
“Great! You’ll see. You’ll look beautiful.” she assured him as she took his hand and led him up to the attic. “Lulu, has a lot of clothes she doesn’t wear anymore. I stored them in the attic to donate to charity this Christmas. But until then, we can put them to good use.”
They
reached the attic, and Lorena went to a wardrobe and began pulling out all
kinds of girls’ clothes. Skirts, frilly shirts, and even dresses. “Wow, I don’t remember Lulu
having so many clothes.” Carl said, surprised at the variety. “My friends also give me
the clothes their daughters no longer wear.” she
explained while gathering pieces to form a single outfit.
“Okay, let’s start with
this.” she said, selecting an outfit that Carl eyed
with curiosity. A long-sleeved pink shirt with white polka dots, a white dress
with a medium-length skirt, pink tights, and white shoes. “It looks nice…” he
said shyly.
“Oh, honey, you look
adorable.” his mother said excitedly when she saw him in
the complete outfit. Carl just blushed, not out of embarrassment, but the
opposite. “Th-thanks.” he replied. “There are many outfits
here, and who knows? Maybe we can do some activities together.” she
said, making Carl excited about what was to come.
The
two of them spent the afternoon this way. Lorena dressed her son in the most
feminine and beautiful outfits she could combine. Carl enjoyed receiving
compliments from his mother about how ‘pretty’ he looked in his outfits. She
even took a few photos.
Since
her daughter Lulu had entered adolescence, she hadn’t spent much time with her
mother, leaving Lorena feeling a bit lonely. But now, it seemed she could
relive those cherished mother-daughter afternoons.
“How about we bake some
cookies?” Lorena suggested. Carl nodded, and they
headed downstairs to the kitchen, but stopped abruptly when he saw his father
and sister in the living room.
“Love... you’re home early.” Lorena
said, surprised. “Yes, we didn’t stay long with Dad. He had one of those PTSD episodes about
his days in the Navy.” her husband explained. “We brought dinner. We went
to the Mexican restaurant that Lulu loves” he
added, pointing to the girl who was unpacking takeout containers with the
restaurant’s logo, a tortilla with an eagle on its shoulder.
“Who’s she?” Lulu
asked when she saw Carl. He had hidden behind his mother, frozen in place at
the sight of his father. “Carl, what on earth are you wearing?” his
father exclaimed, clearly upset, scaring the boy, who clung to his mother.
“Take that off, RIGHT NOW,” he
ordered, stepping closer to Carl. “Dan, wait. What are you doing?” Lorena
intervened. “We were just playing. There’s no need to get so angry.” she
said, stopping her husband.
“Why are you playing these
kinds of games with Carl? He’s a boy.” he
said, raising his voice. “I know, but this isn’t hurting him. We were having a good time
together, and now you’ve scared him.” she
pointed out, noticing that Carl was hiding his face in her back, frightened by
his father’s anger.
“I don’t want you playing
these kinds of games.” he declared in a commanding tone. “Carl, go change. That’s my
final word.” he ordered, and Carl went to his room to do
as his father said. After a while, he came back down, dressed as a boy, looking
at the floor, hoping not to upset his father again.
“That’s what I want. Dress appropriately.” Dan
said. Dinner was quite tense for Carl, who made as little noise as possible.
His father talked about usual things as if nothing had happened. Lorena did the
same but was clearly displeased with her husband’s attitude.
Carl
woke up late the next day. He hadn’t been able to sleep, but when he did, he
fell asleep crying. His mother came into his room and comforted him. “Forgive your father. He
was raised with different values.” she
said, hugging him. “If you don’t want to play dress-up anymore, that’s fine. I don’t want
you to feel nervous.” she assured him.
“No, I do like it.” Carl
said. “Yesterday, I felt good playing with you... Can we do it again?” he
asked timidly. His mother nodded. “Of course.” she said with a smile. “But as you’ve seen, your
father doesn’t need to know.” Carl nodded.
“I can help with that.” his
sister said, entering the room. “I have a lot of clothes that don’t fit me anymore. That dress you
wore yesterday is one of them.” Lulu sat at the foot of the bed as she
explained. “We can store them all in a wardrobe just for you when you play with Mom.”
she suggested, bringing a smile to her brother’s face.
“You’re very kind, Lulu.” Lorena
said. “I was planning to donate them, but I think we’ve found someone to wear
them.” Lorena stroked her son’s hair. “It’s best to keep that
wardrobe in the attic. Your dad sometimes goes on business trips, so we’ll be
able to have time to play together.”
she said.
“That sounds good. Would
you like to have tea parties?” Lulu suggested. “All three of us in pretty
dresses. I like that idea. What do you think, Carl?”
Lorena asked. Carl smiled, imagining all the things they could do.
Although,
unfortunately, they would have to do it behind their father’s back, his mother
and sister were willing to support him. “Yes, I like the idea.” Carl
replied, eager to play with his mother again, and this time with his sister as
a guest.
