Tomas threw a towel he had nearby. It landed on
Marian, covering her like a net. Ruby was momentarily distracted as she tried
to assist her. A can of deodorant hit her in the head, leaving her dazed.
When Marian removed the towel from her body,
she saw her friend crouched on the floor, holding the spot where she had been
hit. The sound of the mattress springs alerted her, but when she looked up, it
was just in time to see Tomas's fist coming at her.
A moment later, Marian felt the same sensation
she had when, as a child, she played hopscotch with her brother on the sidewalk
in their neighborhood. That day, she had tripped over her untied shoelaces and
fallen face-first onto the solid, warm concrete.
Her brain felt strange, as though the
temperature had risen, and a fog engulfed her. She held her face. Her cheekbone
felt firm but grew softer and warmer as the seconds passed. She removed her
hand when the light touch began to hurt.
"Leave now, or it'll be worse for you,
whores!" Tomas shouted, standing over Marian.
He raised his fist again, glaring at her.
"Fuck
you." Marian said, lying flat on her back.
She kicked him as hard as she could in the groin, which was conveniently close.
Tomas fell to his knees, groaning in pain. "You damn bitch!" he
screamed. "You should be on my side... Xander deserves this!" His
face was on the floor as he struggled to catch his breath.
"Xander has mocked and taken advantage of all of
us." he kept yelling as he tried to get
back up. "Shut up!" Ruby said as she sprayed pepper spray directly
into his face. He screamed again and tried to shield himself. She kept pressing
the trigger even as Tomas coughed uncontrollably, and even after the canister
was empty.
"Ruby, I need you
here!" her friend's voice snapped her out of her vengeful frenzy. Marian was
struggling to free Xander from his bindings, but he thrashed desperately. "Calm down, we're trying to get you out of here." she explained, but Xander continued struggling
too much.
Ruby scanned the room and quickly found a small
knife, the kind usually used to cut sandwich bread. With it, they managed to
slice through the thick ropes that bound Xander's limbs to each corner of the
bed.
He leaped away from them into a corner, curling
into a ball and trying unsuccessfully to remove the gag. "Calm down. Come here, and we'll get that off
you." Ruby said, taking the knife.
Suddenly, Daniel entered the room and shut the
door behind him. His nervous expression eased when he saw his sister and her
friend in control of the situation. He spat on the floor before starting to
push one of the small but heavy wardrobes to block the door.
"You made too
much noise." Daniel said, panting for breath. "The
other guys are coming this way." The new alert made the girls
nervous. Marian quickly took out her phone and called Bondy. "Back alley, NOW!" she shouted before hanging up.
They could attest to what Daniel was saying,
they had lowered the volume of the loud music, although it would not be the
only sign.
"What's going on in there? Open the door!" yelled voices from the other side as they pounded and rattled the door.
Marian delivered another low blow to Tomas to ensure he wouldn't get up anytime
soon. He writhed in pain. "We need to get
out of here."
The boys
trying to get in weren't the only problem. The pepper spray in the air was
starting to get to them. Marian in particular could feel the dry and irritating
taste in her throat. Ruby opened the window completely, she and Marian climbed out onto the
roof.
"Look, you and we
don't exactly get along." Daniel explained. "But unless you
want to stay with these guys, COME WITH US." he said, extending his hand. Xander took it
nervously and was pulled outside.
The cold tiles felt uncomfortable underfoot.
Xander was still wearing the cheerleader-style outfit. There was no time for
embarrassment or a wardrobe change, but it was definitely impractical for the
situation.
She searched for an alternative and found one
in a nearby tall tree. "Quick, jump to the
tree." she instructed. "Like in that gym class exercise." she
added. The girls nodded, recalling the drill. But Xander, who played football
instead of taking gym in college didn't know what they were talking about.
"Just build up
speed, jump at the edge, and grab onto the branches." Daniel instructed. He led by example, running the short distance along
the roof outside the room and leaping toward the tree, grabbing onto the thick
branches and moving to the trunk to begin climbing down. Marian and Ruby did
the same, achieving the same result. They made it look so easy. Xander was
petrified with fear. They had at least minimal practice, he didn't.
Already on the ground but with dirt and leaves
on her clothes, Marian ran to the back door and used a rake to jam the handle
just in time to make it hard for the guys to open it.
There were a couple of guys out there, luckily
most of them were already drunk enough to notice what was going on, but the
others were too surprised. "What the hell are you doing?" said
one of the guys by the diving board as he put his beer aside.
A loud crash caught everyone attention. A white
car had entered the backyard, smashing through the wooden fence. "Everyone, get in!" Bondy shouted. Marian pulled out the hidden pepper
spray and released an irritating cloud, which managed to drive those guys away
from the yard amid a symphony of coughing.
"Xander, just
jump!" Daniel called out. Xander hear a noise inside the room caught his
attention. The frat guys had break into the room and Tomas was back on his feet
opening the window.
Panicked, he lost his balance. The tights and
tiles were a slippery mix. The girls let out a shriek. He fell for a few
seconds before landing hard on the pile of trash on the trampoline and bouncing
into some bushes.
Daniel rushed to him, who seemed stunned,
almost passed out. "Xander's hurt!" He tried to carry him but wasn't strong enough.
His sister came to help, and together they managed to drag him to the car.
"There's no time
or room inside. BONDY, THE TRUNK!" The blonde popped the designated
lever while looking in the rearview mirror at the frat boys coming out of the
first-floor windows, looking anything but friendly.
A beer can hit the passenger-side mirror, where
Ruby had climbed in, causing her to let out a small scream. She moved to the
back, trying to hide.
Daniel and Marian loaded Xander into the Trans
Am's trunk. But in the rush, the younger brother climbed in, too. "LET'S GO!" Marian shouted as
she boarded. Bondy shifted into first gear, pressed the accelerator, and let go
of the clutch to speed away from the backyard.
Objects rained down on the car: rocks, empty
bottles, and other debris. A stone shattered the driver's side mirror, and even
the window cracked. "Freaking
lunatics!" the blonde
exclaimed as she noticed the fracture but turned her attention back to the
alley. "Hold on tight back there!" she
yelled. They left running over some trash cans.
The colorful, flashing lights of the fraternity
house faded into the distance quickly. Daniel was on top of Xander,
unintentionally putting his full weight on him. Since Xander still had the gag
in his mouth, he could only let out muffled groans.
“Oh, sorry.” Daniel said as he shifted to one
side, being careful not to fall out of the vehicle. Luckily, both of them were
thin enough to fit inside. Daniel tried reaching for the trunk door to close
it, but it was too far up.
The fleeting glimpses of headlights, the force
of the wind, and the jerking motion of the car made it clear they were speeding
down the road, and standing up would be dangerous.
One of the reasons Bondy adored her coupe so
much was its ability to go incredibly fast. Whenever she could save money, she
spent it on gas to take late-night highway drives and floor it. In this moment the
experience was far from enjoyable.
“Are they following
us?” Bondy shouted. The open trunk made it hard for her to see through the
rearview mirror, the only one she had left. A brief glance at the mostly empty
highway gave Daniel a moment of relief.
That was until he saw a car speeding onto the
road from the same direction they had come from. A familiar car, also a coupe. “He’s coming!” Daniel shouted. Marian used a
mirror she had in her purse to look through the window. “Damn it! It’s Tomas!”
She immediately recognized the ’71 DeTomaso.
“Can you lose him?” the redhead asked nervously. The
sound of the custom horn from Tomas’s car was her answer. He pulled up
alongside the back of the girls’ car, where he could see Xander. Daniel saw him
pointing and shouting something before ramming their car.
“LUNATIC!” Bondy yelled as she tried to steady
the wheel. “You really messed with the wrong guy
by bullying him so much.” Daniel
muttered, holding on tight. “You harassed the
craziest one.”
A police officer was sitting next to the
highway on his motorcycle, rubbing his forehead from the stress of a recent
incident. “Why... Adam…” he muttered, taking out some yellow pills prescribed
to him.
The Trans Am sped past him so suddenly that it
startled him, making him drop the medication. He didn’t need the speed detector
on his belt to know they were well over the limit.
He started his motorcycle, a 1150 RTP. Just as
he was about to enter the road, the ’71 Tomaso zoomed past, almost grazing him. “SHIT!” he
shouted as he turned on the siren and started the chase. “2324. Two
suspects exceeding the speed limit on the western perimeter, kilometer 161.
They’re in two different coupes. White and gray.” he
reported over his radio before accelerating to catch up with the cars.
Despite de speed, the sirens were unmistakable.
“We’re in trouble. It’s the cops. What do we do?” Ruby asked nervously, looking out the back window.
“Being caught isn’t the
problem. My plates being identified is.” Bondy replied, flooring the
accelerator. Tomas rammed the back of the car again. Breaking his own front
lights and shouting nearly unintelligible insults.
“I think he called you a
bitch.” Ruby said. “Just me, or all of us?” Bondy asked, dodging a small car passing on the
highway. “Just you.” Ruby clarified.
“Screw that.” Marian said. “Approach to the right side of the road.” she instructed, pointing at the metal fence
separating the highway from the woods. “YOU WANT US
TO GET PINNED?!” Bondy shouted, trying to control the vehicle.
Xander noticed the police officer closing in
behind Tomas. Normally, this would have been his salvation, but now, everyone
was too compromised.
The car started moving closer to the right.
From his position, Daniel could see how dangerously near they were to the
fence. The fact that they were slowing down didn’t do much to ease his nerves.
“Girls, that maniac is
catching up.” he tried to warn, but no one answered. He could see Tomas grinning from
his car. He moved to the left lane and then accelerated, gaining the momentum
he wanted.
“GIRLS!” Daniel shouted. The Trans Am braked
suddenly, the force causing the trunk door to close.
Tomas watched as the girls break behind, but
with the speed and momentum he had gained, he headed straight for the fence. “Oh, SHIT.” he
yelled as he slammed the brakes, but the wheels skidded, sending his car
straight into the steel barrier.
The officer pursuing them saw the gray car
crash, shards of glass scattering in the air like frost. The passenger door
split in two before tearing off completely. The sound of screeching tires on
asphalt stopped as the car flipped over itself.
Tomas shielded his face as everything spun,
gravity shifting from top to bottom over and over. Even with the seatbelt on,
his body slammed against the seat and the driver’s side door with tremendous
force.
The officer watched as the car stop after
colliding with the barrier again. He cautiously parked his motorcycle. “2324, we need
an ambulance on the western perimeter, kilometer 165. Severe crash involving
one of the suspects. The other suspect is still fleeing.” he
reported over the radio while getting off to assist the injured.
He approached the car, now windowless. A pair of wheels had come off, and the engine sounded like a popcorn machine. “My arm... my arm.” Tomas muttered before losing consciousness from the multiple cuts and fractures across his body.
