----- Needing a Quick Ride -----
-- Written by "Irene
Naridza"
It was a sunny spring afternoon on the lonely
roads connecting the outskirts of the cities. The shadows of the trees covered
the sides of the paved path that cut through the dense forest.
Two feminine figures could be seen waiting in
the comforting and cool shade of the tall pines.
20 MINUTES EARLIER
Kevin and Clover wanted to get to a game of
their favorite baseball team, the White Squirrels. It was the tournament final
their team had returned to after several years. They were on their way until
Kevin's car broke down.
A quick inspection made them realize the
problem. The oil seemed to be of poor quality, so despite being recently
replaced, it caused damage to the engine. Fortunately, Clover had convinced
Kevin to pay for car insurance, so a tow truck soon arrived to take the
vehicle.
Kevin asked the driver if he could give them a
ride to the capital city, where the game would be played. But he was told that
the insurance company's workshop was in the neighboring city.
As their team was really important to them,
they decided to stay on the side of the road trying to hitchhike from the few
cars passing by. However, no one stopped. "This
is bad, the game starts in 40 minutes and we're stranded in the middle of
nowhere." Kevin said
helplessly.
Clover, willing to do whatever it took to get
to the game, had a sudden and unique idea. "Come
here for a moment." She
said, taking her boyfriend's hand and leading him into the forest. "I don't think we'll get there any sooner if we go
through the woods." Kevin
said.
"No, not that. I
have an idea that will help us get a ride." she said as she searched her bag for
the extra clothes she had brought. She always carried them to games in case
some drunk fan started throwing beer. But at that moment, she had something
else in mind.
15 MINUTES LATER
Two feminine figures could be seen waiting in
the comforting and cool shade of the tall pines. "I
don't really think this is going to work." Kevin said, completely feminized by his
girlfriend.
"I think it
will," Clover said. "If you're a girl, at 27, you know a couple of
stupid guys would do anything for a cute girl. It's up to you to take advantage
of that or not," she explained as she finished retouching her
boyfriend's eyeshadow.
"Are you sure a
couple of stupid guys will pass through this road at this time?" he asked, slightly annoyed. "A
couple have been passing through. But your masculine presence makes them drive
away. That kind of guy only approaches single women because they fantasize
about having a chance to hit on them."
Kevin was surprised by what his girlfriend
said. "Hey, wait. Slow down. What are you
talking about? Are you saying I'm the problem?" he asked as he fluttered through the air the
purse his girlfriend had given him along with the outfit.
"Of course not,
Kevin... Doris. On the contrary, you're a great opportunity. Two hot girls
attract more attention than one." she said as she handed him some sunglasses. "The
only problem is your voice, so I recommend you let me talk. At least guys like
that. Nice and quiet girls."
Kevin raised an eyebrow. "I don't like quiet girls, and what's with
Doris?" he asked, crossing
his arms. "Doris is a suitable girl's name
for your situation" Clover replied as she watched the road for
any car.
"And all that
about quiet girls? Why are you suddenly acting so... calculating?" Kevin asked. "I just want to
get to the tournament final on time. Just like you. Plus, I know a lot about
the average man's mind in this country. They're lustful and easily manipulated
by a cute girl."
Kevin felt very offended. "I'M NOT LIKE THAT" he exclaimed before making a pouty face, a
gesture that Clover found very endearing. "Of
course. You're different from the other brainless muscle sacks. Short, skinny,
and, above all, you focus on feelings. That's why I fell in love with
you."
Kevin blushed and felt warmth in his heart.
Without saying anything more, he approached to hug his girlfriend, who returned
the gesture. Then they patiently waited for a car to ask for a ride.
After a few minutes, a pickup truck appeared. "As rehearsed, let me talk." she
said, signaling for the truck to stop.
The loud hard rock music got louder as the
truck stopped. The driver opened the door and a couple of beer cans fell to the
floor making a perfectly audible sound despite the harshness of the engine.
"Do you need
help, ladies?" said the guy, a tall young adult with a neglected appearance. Clover
hesitated a bit, but spoke. "We need a ride to the capital city. Are you
going there?" she asked in a friendly manner.
"Well, I was on
my way to the hospital." the guy said. "But for a couple of
cute girls, maybe I can get you to the stadium." he said, noticing Kevin's White Squirrels emblem
shirt, who remained silent and focused on his role as Doris. "Wow, you're observant." Clover said.
"So, can you take
us?" she asked, hoping her assumptions weren't true. "Sure, but in exchange for something." Clover faked a smile hoping he wouldn't continue in
the direction she thought. "What is it?
Money? We have a couple of bills." she
said as she pretended to search her purse.
"No, it's not that.
It's something more... special," the guy said,
with suspicious enthusiasm. "What's so
special?" Clover asked. She
already guessed the answer. Normally, she would end the conversation at that
point. But she wanted that situation to serve as an example for Kevin and prove
that she was right about men's general behavior.
The guy changed his expression. "My grandmother is very sick. The doctor said she
doesn't have much time left. Her wish was to see me get a girlfriend, but even
though I try, I can't. I don't know why." Clover couldn't help
but notice the emblems on the board belonging to certain celebrities known for
promoting sexist attitudes in their media.
"(A complete
mystery)" she thought to herself as she turned her attention back to the guy. "This makes me sad. But if any of you pretended to be my
girlfriend while I gave my grandmother a final visit, I'll give you a quick
ride, I'll even pay you." begged
the guy.
Kevin hoped Clover would reject the proposal.
He didn't like it at all. He preferred to walk rather than agree. "Fine. My friend, Doris. She'll be your fake
girlfriend." Clover said so
suddenly that Kevin couldn't process what was happening before she spoke again.
"But she's very
shy. She doesn't like to talk. Besides, you'll have to be quick. The game
starts in 20 minutes." she said before dragging Kevin by the hand and getting into the truck.
"Thank you very much,
girls. This means a lot to me," said the guy before driving away. "Don't
worry. Seeing my grandmother will take us a maximum of 5 minutes, in that case
of distances, very fast." The boy pressed the accelerator to
the floor.
Kevin held on as best he could against the
unexpected speed. The road in front of them blurred as the truck moved at
maximum speed with agility between curves and straight roads.
“How could you hand me
over like that?” Kevin whispered as sharply as he could. “Would
you rather it be me?” she
responded, unaffected by the treatment or the speed at which they were going. "Besides. I'll reward you when we get back home.” She assured.
Kevin could only hold onto a handhold. He
already knew since college that Clover was very passionate about her favorite
baseball team. He constantly heard her say that she would do anything to see
them in the stadium if they reached a final again.
But she never knew that when she said “I would do anything to see The White Squirrels play in a
final.” he was very serious.
Seeing her there, with an expression unchanged
in the face of the dizzying speed of the truck, he remembered something that he
repeated in college. “I would do anything to see
you happy.”
The truck finally stopped at a hospital from
where the stadium could be seen for a considerable distance. Without saying
anything, Kevin reached for his girlfriend's bag. He took out lipstick and a
small mirror.
“Maybe I have to kiss.
You know, to make it look realistic.” Kevin whispered. He was cooperating with Clover's plan to have a quick
ride. That made her smile.
