----- The Broken Vase -----
--
Written by “Irene Naridza”
“Come on, Stuart. Stand up,
there are still 15 minutes until your ballet session ends.” Jenny said as she paused the music.
"I'm very tired.
You've been making me dance for hours. Remember me again. Why do I have to wear
this girl’s ballet outfit?” he
asked, annoyed as he sat on the floor trying to be comfortable.
“Because you disobeyed mom
and dad by playing soccer inside the house and you broke grandma's vase. Just
two months after she passed away.” The
blonde girl answered as she crossed her arms.
“I already said I was
sorry. It wasn't my intention. Change me back.” Stuart protested in what sounded like a
tantrum. “I don't know if that looked cute… or
pathetic.” His sister said before
laughing.
“A ‘sorry’ is NOT going to
fix the 300-year-old vase grandma left to dad.” Jenny said seriously. “Not my words, but maybe yours. That smoke that came out
of the vase gave you magical powers.” Stuart
pointed to Jenny's hand that was emitting a white aura.
“It was while you were
testing your powers that you turned me into a girl. remember?" Stuart said as he looked at himself once more
in the mirror. He still didn't believe what his sister could do now. “I'm sure you can fix that vase with your glitters too.”
“I'm still testing these
powers, but I'm sure I can do it.” Jenny
said. "Then do it." Stuart demanded. “Not
until we finish our ballet session.” Jenny
responded as she walked over to the speakers to play the music again.
“I won't play your game. Do
you think I won’t tell mom?” Stuart
said, stomping his foot. “Tell her what?... Yes,
I already remembered.” Jenny
cleared her throat.
“You will tell her that
you, a 30-year-old unemployed man, started playing soccer in the living room. Knocked
down a priceless vase on his younger sister's head, breaking it into pieces.
But since it was enchanted, it gave her powers and she transformed you into a
ballerina girl. Will you tell her that?” she asked with a questioning look.
"Wait, wait. No, I mean,
yes. Yes, I will tell her that because that is what happened.” Stuart answered nervously. “I already apologized for your bump.” He said before hiding his gaze from her.
“Mom and dad will only
believe the first half. I just have to get you back to normal before they come
and see the beautiful broken vase on the couch and the bump on my head.” Jenny noticed another splinter from the
vase in her hair. She removed it and tossed it into the amount gathered on the
cushion as evidence. “They will finally kick you
out.”
Jenny
turned the music on the speaker again. “Or, we
could practice ballet. I would fix the vase with this magic and return you to
normal before mom and dad arrive. Maybe I can even help you finally get a real
job.” She extended her hand to her brother.
“Is this a deal, Stacy?” Jenny always fantasized about having a little
sister instead of a lazy older brother, this was the best thing that had
happened to her in years. Stuart thought for a moment and then shook his
sister's hand. “Can I at least choose my name or
can you transform me into a girl my age?”
he asked resignedly.
"No. The role of
little Stacy suits you.” She
said before using her magic to transform the living room into a dance room. “This place seems more appropriate to continue your
ballet classes.”
Stuart,
or rather, Stacy, followed her sister's instructions. Not only for fear that
her parents would find out about the broken vase. She was actually interested
in Jenny using her magic to get her a job.
