----- Ballerina for Halloween -----
-- Written by “Irene Naridza”
It was Halloween and Emmett wanted to go out
and collect candy, without obeying any rules. He went to the lonely porches and
take advantage that no one was watching him to take the entire basket of sweets
in his bag. He felt comfortable having a good haul of candy, but he didn't care
about the other kids who were also going trick-or-treating that night.
He arrived at a house separated from the
rest. It was Mrs. Carolina's house. An older woman who had moved from abroad to
enjoy her retirement in a place that was presumed to be quiet. Since Halloween
was not celebrated in her native country, she left a sign on the door with a
clear message. “NO CANDY”
Emmett felt indignant. “No candy? On Halloween night? IMPOSSIBLE” he murmured. The boy then saw in that situation
the opportunity to carry out one of his pranks. Which was throwing eggs and
toilet paper rolls.
Emmet searched through the pockets of his
Halloween costume, which was a biker, or better say, an attempt at a biker. He
found what he was looking for, which was a box with six eggs, some in poor
condition. With poor aim, he threw them towards Mrs. Carolina's house.
Once satisfied, the boy tried to flee. But
just before he could leave. The owner of the house came out and caught him at
the scene. “HEY BRAT, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE
DOING?” she shouted. “Emmet? Are you that naughty boy everyone talks about?” The boy knew that was not good.
"Now you'll see. I’ll call
your parents.” Emmet
froze at the woman's threat. His parents had made it clear that they would
throw away his video game console if they heard one more complaint about his
behavior again.
"No, wait. PLEASE
DON'T TELL MY PARENTS.” He
begged. At first the woman was surprised by the boy's reaction, but she saw in
that an opportunity for a punishment that she had in mind. “Well, if you don't want your parents to find out. YOU’LL
HAVE TO CLEAN MY PORCH.” She
indicated.
Emmett obeyed and as best he could, he
cleaned the stains from the rotten eggs until there were no traces left. He
thought his penance was over so he tried to sneak away unseen. But he didn't
find his bag of candy anywhere. “Were you
looking for this?” said the older
woman from the door of the house. She was holding the naughty boy's haul of
candy.
“Um, yeah, it's mine. Could
you give it to me?” Emmett
asked. "I want to go home." He extended his hands for her to hand him the
bag, but the woman pushed it away and shook her head. “Not so fast, young man. I checked the bag and noticed
that you have accumulated quite a big loot.”
The woman began to speak.
“I'm not sure how this
tradition works, but I'm sure no one can gather so much candy in a short time
in a small town. You haven't been hoarding the sweets without leaving anything
for others, have you?" Emmet
was speechless at the woman's deduction.
“This… THAT IS NOT YOUR
BUSINESS.” The boy responded in a haughty manner. Mrs.
Carolina didn't like it at all. “Well now it's
my business and yours too. Especially when your punishment isn’t over yet.”
Emmett felt confused. “What? But I already
cleaned your porch.” He said,
pointing to the area once stained by rotten eggs, now spotless.
“Yes, you have paid for
what you did to me.” Mrs.
Carolina began to explain herself. “But I think
you should also pay for the constant pranks you make in the neighborhood.” She said with a somewhat sinister smile.
“I don't know much about
this tradition called Halloween, but I know it's about giving candy. I want you
to stay here for this evening handing out the candy you hoarded from the other
houses. This way they can reach all the children as they were supposed to.” The woman explained to the boy.
Emmett didn't look happy at all. “I REFUSE.” He
exclaimed. “Those sweets are mine. It doesn't
matter how I got them, besides…” he
couldn't speak anymore until the woman reminded him that if he didn't do
exactly what she said, his parents would find out about his mischief.
Now with the naughty boy quiet and obedient,
Carolina looked him up and down and began to think for a few seconds. “I think I have the right costume for you for tonight.” She said before take him by the hand and took him
inside her house.
1 HOUR LATER.
Halloween night continued its course. There
were a good number of children in their costumes laughing and counting their
candy before deciding which house would be next where they would arrive with
the festive phrase. "TRICK OR TREAT"
There were two girls holding hands with their
mother. One dressed as a little witch and another as a feline from a popular
cartoon. Seeing the lights of Mrs. Carolina's house on and a sign that said
“COME FOR YOUR CANDY” they approached and knocked on the door, which was soon
answered. "TRICK OR TREAT" Both girls exclaimed at same
time.
The person receiving them was a young girl
dressed as a ballerina. She wore a pink leotard with flower embroidery, a
pretty tutu, impeccable white tights that hugged her thin legs, and beautiful
ballet slippers that, together with the delicately combed bun, completed her outfit.
“He…hello… Good night.” The ballerina said. “Look mommy. A BALLERINA.” Exclaimed Cassie, the girl in the little witch
costume. “Mommy, that reminds me. Can you sign
Kelly and me up for the Ballet classes that start soon?” She asked with a shine in her eyes.
The woman looked at her daughter. One looked
excited and the other, noticeably shy, seemed to show with her eyes that she
didn't like the idea. “OF COURSE.” The mother said smiling. Cassie jumped excitedly
while Kelly blushed in embarrassment and tried to look away.
She met the face of the ballerina who had a
bowl full of sweets. What caught her attention was not the variety of sweets nor
the impeccable and delicate ballet costume. It was that the ballet girl also
seemed to be a little uncomfortable.
“Ta… Take, For you." The ballet girl said before handing out a
generous amount of candy to both girls. "HAPPY
HALLOWEEN." Said with fake
excitement. Maybe she was able to convince the Cassie and her mother, but Kelly
noticed that it was not an honest phrase. That because she had also been
pretending to be happy that night. But she kept silent.
They all thanked for the sweets and leave to
continue with the Halloween night. Then, the ballerina wasted no time and
returned inside. “I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE FORCING
ME TO DO THIS” Emmet complained to Mrs. Carolina.
“It's your punishment,
Emily. Maybe you will learn your lesson and change your behavior.” The woman said as she drank some tea. “How am I supposed to learn that by being forced to dress
like a girl?” Emmett asked
annoyed.
“Do you want to wear that
outfit in public?” the
woman asked with a fixed look. "Of course
not." Emmett replied nervously. “THEN
DON'T DO HEAVY MISCHIEVOUSNESS AGAIN” Mrs.
Carolina exclaimed triumphantly before taking another sip of her cinnamon tea.
Knowing there was nothing he could do, Emmet
resigned himself. He would have to be EMILY, Mrs. Carolina's niece for the rest
of Halloween night. She was about to sit down to take a break until she heard a
knock on the door and the unmistakable laughter of children.
Emily sighed before taking the bowl of candy,
preparing her feminine voice and her best friendly face. "HAPPY HALLOWEEN."

Writer’s Opinion and More ---------------
• I've had the idea for a while, but just as a borrowed concept.
• I know it's not Halloween. But I was just able to complete it now and I’m not going to wait 10 months to publish it.
• Here I leave some paragraphs discarded for being unnecessary.
o (This was the first paragraph, with which the story began.)
Emmett was quite a mischievous boy, but at the same time inconsiderate. He didn't mind bothering others as long as he was having fun. So, he had earned the contempt of many people in his neighborhood. The neighbors always complained to his parents, who only threatened to punish him by leaving him without his video games.
o (These were paragraphs 2 and 3 after that “1 hour later”, I thought I could improve it in a single paragraph.)
Two girls were holding hands with their mother. Then they saw the house at the end of the street with the porch lights on. “Isn't that the new neighbor's house?” asked the girl dressed as a witch. "Yeah. I thought she wouldn’t celebrate this holiday.” Her mother commented. “But we can go there, we don't lose anything by asking.”
The girls walked in front of her mother and knocked on the door, which was soon answered. "TRICK OR TREAT" Both girls exclaimed in unison.
• This story is inspired by another one I read years ago on Deviant Art, now I can't find it. That one was a little darker.
• I said it already, but, for security and cultural reasons, Halloween is not celebrated in my country, Ecuador.
• If you guessed it, then you are correct. This story is related to “Powder and Halloween”
