----- The Promise of the Park -----
Among
the forested mountains was a small town that enjoyed great vegetation that was
the attraction of several tourists who came to the place to camp or
mountaineering. Firtown was named in honor of the most abundant tree in the
forest that surrounded it.
In
the center, the market, a recently opened hotel and the park were concentrated.
This park was particularly beautiful and large. There were bushes full of
colorful flowers, highly detailed stone statues, and a good variety of fruit
trees.
Visitors
have the feeling that the place had a magical aura surrounding it. And
actually, they were right. Such a beautiful place could not be maintained by
human work, but by fairies. They were natives and had made an agreement with
the mayor's office to give a small portion of their magic in exchange for a
commitment to keep the forest intact.
Ohone
was the leader of the fairies who were in charge of maintaining the park. A
very laborious task since she had to ensure that all the fairies applied the
spells well and in a coordinated manner at least one day a week. But Ohone
always manage to make it.
One
day, she was curious about how Julius and Jessy's life was like. Those two
children she had met 2 months ago. They had entered recklessly while doing
maintenance and Ohone had to cast a special spell so they could leave safely.
As
a side effect, the spell turned the older brother into a girl, but gave him the
knowledge of guidance to leave the park before it’s magic absorbed them. Ohone
was confident that the effect of the spell would wear off and that they would
end up forgetting everything.
The
fairy quietly approached the house where those children and their family were
spending their holidays. From the leafy trees she looked towards the house, but
to her surprise. She saw that Julius was in the backyard of the house. He still
was a girl. “Oh no. The effect of the spell was
not undone.”
She began to remember
that occasion. “I was in a hurry that time. I surely made one or two mistakes and the
effect of the spell ended up being longer…” she murmured as she watched Julius sigh heavily. “It could even be permanent.
I have to correct this immediately.”
The fairy quickly flew
back to the park, she selected several flowers from various bushes, with speed
and agility she wove their steams, after a while, she had a crown of flowers.
Although it was the same type, it was different from the one she gave to Julius
the first time.
The
fairy soon returned to Julius, who was still sad. Ohone approach through the
bushes. To try to place the flower crown on him without him noticing. After
losing his memories, seeing her there would only bring up more questions and there
was no time to answer.
Just
when she was about to place the crown on him. Julius began to sob. Ohone freezes
trying not to attract attention. “It can't be
that all this is about to end.” Julius muttered. “If only I could find that fairy again…”
Ohone was intrigued by what he said. As
Julius seemed to remember her, she decided to show herself. “Erm… can you remember me?” Ohone
said appearing behind the young one. Julius was startled when he saw her,
giving a small cry.
“Julius, is everything
okay?” A
woman asked. Julius, who heard her footsteps approaching, hurried to hide the
fairy under a nearby empty flower pot. When the mother looked out the door, she
only saw her daughter sitting on the porch.
"Yes mom. I’m fine…I just…I
saw a mouse.” She
excused herself nervously. “Don't worry sugar cub.
The mice here are harmless, they won't hurt you.” The woman said before returning inside the house.
Julius sighed in relief before picking up the flower pot.
"Is it really
you?" She
asked quietly with hope in her words. “If you
mean the fairy you saw in the park the other day that give you a flower crown
that transformed you into a girl. Yes, it's me." Ohone said as she
sat up.
The
fairy took a small crystal that she had in a bag at her waist. She grabbed it
and brought it close to her chest. After a few seconds it shone. “Just as I feared.”
She said as she discerned the state of the spell.
The
fairy looked for the flower crown that she had brought and found it quickly. She
reached for it and brought it to Julius. “My
magical intuition tells me that the effect of the spell is permanent, rather,
almost permanent. Put this on, it will get you back to normal.” The young girl stared at the crown before pushing
it away from her.
“That's why I wanted to
find you...I wanted to talk about it.” She said, leaving the fairy surprised. “Whatever you have to tell me, do it in the forest. I
don’t want to attract the attention of another humans.” Julius
nodded and they both went into the periphery of the forest near the house.
After
making sure that there were no other people hearing them, Ohone asked. “What did you want to tell me?” The
fairy was expectant.
"It was all very
strange. One day I was living my life. I was a normal girl, I helped my
parents, played with my sister. We do everything together. It was like we were
the perfect family.” Julius's face reflected a certain glow, like
someone telling a close friend about something they’re very passionate about.
“But the next day. I
remembered everything, that I was actually a boy and that my sister and I were
in that park. Basically, I remembered everything. I remembered that this is not
really me. Which is part of a spell.” Her expression darkened as she said those
words.
“Our vacation is over. We
will return to the city tomorrow. But I don't want this to fade away. I don’t
want to go back to normal.” she
said in frustration. "What are you talking
about? Don't you want to be a boy again? Do you know that you will still have
your family being a male?” said the fairy, not understanding the
situation very well.
"Yeah. I know, but the
thing… is that…” Julius
seemed to hesitate on whether to say it or not. “I
feel that in this time I have been a girl. I have been able to connect better
with my little sister and my family. I feel like we can be closer…” She said shyly.
"Besides. It hasn't
been bad at all being a girl. There are many things that I like this way. I
feel like…like I want to stay this way…” There were a lot of things she wanted to
express, but she wasn't sure whether to open up completely.
“So… Are you afraid that
the spell will be undone when you leave the mountains because you feel happier
being a girl?” Ohone asked. Julius felt that the fairy said
in a single sentence the fear and desire that she could feel, but not express. She
nodded slowly not knowing how the magical being would react.
“Not all spells require you
to stay in a specific place for them to maintain their effect.” Ohone
began to explain. “The spell of the first flower crown can remain whether you are here or
on the other side of the world.”
Julius's face lit up again. "THAT IS
AWESOME." She said excitedly, but immediately she
pretended not to be so happy. “I mean…oh wow. I guess I had no choice anyway.”
Ohone
raised her eyebrow at that sudden change of attitude. "Hey. Why do you hide your emotions?” Julius
hesitated again about whether to be frank. "Well.
Yes, I would like to still be a girl when I return home. But… It's not
something I want anyone to hear me say. Don't you think that's strange?"
"Of course not.” The fairy said. “Humans
are often complex. Very different from each other but everyone wants the same
thing. Happiness. You’re not strange for wanting to be happy in that unique
way. You’re just another human…a more decent one than others I've met.”
Julius was speechless. She didn't expect to
hear words of support, she felt a tingling running through her entire body. "Thank you. Thank you
so much." She said feeling great happiness.
“I don't want to ruin the moment. But actually,
there’s a spell that will fade.” The fairy said.
Julius felt a coldness run down her spine. "What
is it?" she asked worriedly.
“When you leave the mountains. Your memories
will fade. But when you come back. Your memories of the park, the fairies and
the magic behind it all will all come back to you.”
Julius
was relieved that her girl-form was not compromised. “It is part of the security protocol to keep this magical sanctuary
safe.” Ohone said. “Well. That's fine, although I wouldn't do anything to hurt
this magical place.” The young girl said.
“Julius. Come here. You
have to pack your suitcase.” The
call from the mother reached the ears of her daughter. "Well. I have to go." Julius said. “I
promise to keep the secret…oh. Also come to visit you in this forest.”
“Promise me something more
important.” The fairy said. "What is it?" Julius
asked with eager curiosity. "Be happy." Ohone asked as she looked proudly at the girl
in front of her.
"I promise." Julius
promised smiling.
THE END.
