----- A Moment with Dad -----

-- Written by “Irene Naridza”

“Does your son wear girls’ clothes?” asked the older man to his son. “Yes. It’s such a disappointment… I still can’t believe it. What did I do wrong?” lamented the younger man, still unable to comprehend that his son enjoyed wearing girls' clothing.

“Well… what did you tell him?” asked the father. “I scolded him, of course. I won’t let him go astray.” the son asserted before taking a sip of beer. “Carl must have been frightened.” said the old man.

“I’d rather scare him than let him live a lie.” the son said sternly. The old man sat in silence, staring at his beer can. Instead of drinking from it, he looked up at his son. “I don’t think what he did deserved you yelling at him.” he said.

“Dad, are you crazy? How can I allow something like that? HE’S A BOY.” the son exclaimed incredulously.

“Daniel, a firm hand is used to correct a child who is taking the easy way in life. The path where you steal from others, hurt them, and lie for personal gain. That’s not a path for anyone.” the old man said, still seated in his chair.

“What are you suggesting? That I let him dress like a sissy?” asked the man, incredulous and angry at his father’s words. “No. I’m not the one to tell you whether you should or shouldn’t allow that. But what I will tell you is that there are things truly worth worrying about.” replied the old man.

“When I was young like you, back in 1979.” the old man began to recount. “There were things on the radio and in the newspapers. Stories about men kissing men and women kissing women. It was a huge scandal. People would tear those sections out of the newspaper.”

The old man gestured with his aged, wrinkled hands, moving slowly. “People called it ‘the worst horror that could exist.’ Your mother always turned off the radio when she knew someone was going to talk about those topics.” the old man paused to think for a few seconds.

“Back then, you were already born and I was mostly in the army. I visited your mother and you whenever I could, and I was confused. Why two men kissing could cause such an uproar?” the old man continued. “Dad… that’s unnatural.” said the younger man, with a hint of disgust.

“There are other things that are unnatural too.” said the old man. “In 1980, with all that drug and cartel trouble from South America, our squadron was sent to clean up once their hideouts were found.” The old man’s gaze drifted off into the distance.

“Dad, don’t start.” said Daniel. He wished his daughter or someone younger were present. He used the excuse that those weren’t stories to tell with children around, but in reality, it was he who was deeply unsettled by his father’s war stories.

“The cartels had taken control of the tropical zone of the continent.” the old man continued regardless. “Intelligence would give us a point, and we would rain down on it. Over time, it became like killing ants. You uncover their hiding spot, and they start running in all directions.” The old man paused again.

“The worst part was when you did a sweep. When the smell of gunpowder was so strong you had to wear a mask or let it fill your lungs.” the old man pointed to his chest, then to the tube that ran into his nose, connected to an oxygen tank.

“What the cartels did in their hideouts wasn’t just storing or making drugs. They tortured and killed people in the most twisted ways. There was much talk about that those people being involved in that world. But that was only half true. Many were people who had the bad luck of crossing paths with them when they were in a bad mood. Cartel are sick people… unnatural people.” the old man said.

“There was a woman, Pamela… don’t tell your mother, but she was my first love.” Daniel smiled and nodded, promising to keep the secret. “One day, I found out her family was looking for her. The last thing known about Pamela was that a man had disrespected her in the street by slapping her on the rear. She yelled at him and hit him with her purse… and the guy took her away in a car.”

The elderly’s son already feared the worst. “A year later, her body was found in a vacant lot next to a farm. It had a banner with a phrase written in Spanish and English. The intelligence lady said that even the Spanish phrase had terrible spelling. It said ‘El Cartel del Solar es de respeto.’, in our language. It means ‘The Solar Cartel is sign of respect’” Daniel felt a knot in his stomach.

“What they did to Pamela… it’s indescribable. Even if we face those guys later. Even if the Solar Cartel was one of the few criminal organizations to be completely wiped out. Those images come to me every time I hear people talk about how things today are worse than in my time.” the old man concluded.

“Dad, I know you saw things in your career as a soldier. But I don’t think that makes Carl’s situation any less serious.” Daniel said.

“Of course it doesn’t. Because from the start… it’s not a serious situation.” the old man replied. “Questionable or not, it’s not something serious. Carl is your son, and as his father, it’s your responsibility to guide him in life.”

The younger man fell silent for a few seconds, then sighed in frustration. “Dad… the truth is, I don’t think you understand. You don’t really understand.” he said before getting up. He paced around the room, thinking about his son. Then he realized his father had been silent for a long time. “Dad… DAD… Daddy?”

Daniel woke up startled in his bed, sweating. His wife sat up as well, seeing him so agitated. “Are you okay, Danny?” she asked. “My father… I dreamed about the day he died.” Daniel said, panting a little. “We had our last conversation again.” he said, trying to calm down.

“What did he say?” asked Lorena, sitting up on the bed. “We talked… about very personal things.” Daniel said, not wanting to give many details. He didn’t like talking about his son’s liking for girls’ clothes, not even with his wife.

“Did he talk about his experiences as a veteran?” she asked. She had also heard her father-in-law’s stories. They seemed unsettling to her. “No. Not exactly. He told me… that… I should remember that I’m a father.” Daniel said before lying back down.

“It seems Mr. Tomas’ talk was important.” Lorena said.

“It was, only that… I don’t know how to do it.” he sighed before trying to go back to sleep.

“Do what?” asked his wife.

Daniel sat back up and told her everything he had been thinking about lately.

TWO DAYS LATER.

Lulu was with her younger brother, Carl. They were in the attic playing as they usually did on Wednesday afternoons. At that time, their father was most likely busy at work.

“Would you like more tea, Iris?” asked Lulu as their tea party continued.

“Yes, thank you very much.” Carl replied. Over time, his mother and sister realized that the name “Carl” sounded a bit out of place during their playtime. So, the name ‘Iris’ suggested by their mother, took its place. Carl loved it.

“What are you going to do tomorrow, Iris?” asked Lulu. During their tea parties, they usually talked about different topics from their daily lives. School, high school. Even their mother would share different anecdotes from her work at a cosmetics factory.

“Mom said it would be great if I started practicing ballet, but I told her I wasn’t interested.” said Carl. He was wearing his favorite dress, a light blue one with ribbons around the skirt. He loved wearing it when he was “Iris.”

“I like ballerina outfits, but I don’t like ballet.” he said.

“I feel the same.” Lulu commented. “But you don’t need to be an astronaut to wear an astronaut outfit on Halloween, so I guess you don’t need to be a ballerina to wear one of their pretty outfits.” the older sister added.

“You’re right.” Carl, or rather, Iris replied. He took a heart-shaped cookie. They had baked them together hours earlier. Since his older sister was about to turn 16, their mother had no problem with her using the oven unsupervised.

“But the problem is that we don’t have a ballerina outfit.” said Iris after taking a sip of cinnamon tea from the porcelain cup in front of him.

“There’s a ballet studio in the city that sells them. The problem is that the price is considerable, and I don’t think Mom would want to buy it just for you to wear it at home and not to practice ballet.” Iris concluded.

“There are always more economical, but equally favorable options.” said a deep voice coming from the attic door. Lulu and Iris turned around, frightened to recognize their father’s voice. But their expressions changed when they saw what he was holding in one of his arms. It was a ballet outfit, seemingly Iris’s size.

“Your mom said you’d like to try one, but that you didn’t have one.” he said as he approached his kids. For them, his presence there felt a bit unnatural since they had never seen him there during their tea parties.

“It was easy to buy it at a costume shop.” Daniel said as he crouched down to be at Iris’s height. “Do you want to try it on?” he asked, looking at him in his favorite dress. Noticing his hair delicately combed.

Iris didn’t know how to react. His father was there, not only accepting his taste for feminine clothing, but buying him an outfit he had wanted to wear for a while.

Iris stood like that for a few seconds. In the end, he didn’t answer his father’s question. He was too busy hugging him and crying on his shoulder. More than any dress or ballet costume, his father’s support and understanding of his tastes was what he wanted most from him, and he had finally gotten it.

The End

-- Written by “Gale Kepler” and “Irene Naridza”

Emily and David's parents were heading to the woods to spend an afternoon with friends. However, neither of the children were invited. Emily was going to a friend’s birthday party, while David would stay home alone, watching TV, which made him feel sad.

Emily went to her friend’s house to show off how lovely she looked in her new dress, but she noticed her neighbor was feeling down, so she asked him why. David explained that he felt lonely and was on the verge of tears, but his friend hugged him. Emily thought about how she could help him, and then an idea came to her.

“David, do you want to come to my friend’s birthday party?” she asked with a smile. “But it’s only for girls.” he responded sadly. “Don’t worry, I have a solution. There’s still an hour before they come to pick me up for the party. Let’s go to my room.” Emily said. David smiled and followed her.

Once there, Emily pulled out a box labeled ‘Old Clothes’ from under the bed. She took out a pink dress and said “I’ll dress you up like a girl, you’ll look beautiful.” David hesitated for a moment. “I don’t know… I shouldn’t, it’s just…” He was about to continue, but Emily rolled her eyes and interrupted. “Don’t worry, it’s not like anyone will notice. TRUST ME.” She assured him.

David thought about it and decided to trust her. Emily laid out an outfit on her bed. “First, put these on,” she said, holding up an item of clothing. “These are tights, they’re very comfortable when it’s cold. All pretty girls…” she paused to point at herself and then at David. “WE WEAR THEM.” The tights were white with a diamond pattern.             She helped him put them on, as he had no experience with them.

“Now this. It was my favorite dress, but it doesn’t fit me anymore. It will fit you perfectly.” After putting the dress on him, she handed him a pair of pink shoes, which he put on by himself without any trouble. Emily stepped back to admire her work. “Hmm… I’m missing something… I KNOW!” She took his hand and led him to one of her dressers. From there, she took out a small pink lipstick, which she had bought at a store for a very low price.

“Do this, OOO.” she instructed, making a circle with her lips. He imitated her, allowing her to apply the lipstick. “Good, now smack your lips together.” He obeyed. “It tastes like strawberry.” he said with a smile. Emily was increasingly satisfied with her work.

Next, she put a necklace with a pink butterfly around his neck, then some earrings. “You don’t need pierced ears for these. They’re clip-ons.” she explained as she attached them. “Your hair is a bit long, but just a little brushing will do.” Emily said as she sat her friend on the dresser and started using a brush.

“I was supposed to get a haircut today, but my parents went on a forest expedition instead.” David explained. “That’s actually good. It matches this occasion perfectly.” Emily took a ribbon and tied it in David’s hair, making a bow just like her mother had taught her so many times.

“All done, let’s go to the mirror.” Emily and David walked over to the wardrobe mirror. “Aww, you look beautiful, Avi.” She said, her eyes shining. David was surprised, then smiled and giggled. “I look so pretty… no… I, AVI, LOOK PRETTY.” he said, overjoyed. “I told you so.” Emily added. This time, Avi hugged Emily. “Thank you for not leaving me alone.”

The two friends struck poses in front of the mirror until they heard the doorbell ring. They went downstairs to find the birthday girl’s aunt, who was picking up the guests. “Hi, Daphne, this is Avi, a good friend of mine. Can she come?” Daphne looked surprised at Avi for a few seconds.

“I don’t see why not.” The three of them got in the car and chatted about school, the neighborhood, and things Emily made up, with Avi going along with it.

For a moment, Avi’s heart skipped a beat when they picked up another girl, who was a classmate of both of them at school. However, she didn’t recognize him at all, which gave him more confidence, and now he felt much more cheerful.

When they arrived, they went to the living room with the other girls, who were just about to start the usual party games. Emily stayed by Avi’s side, introducing her and sticking with her, like the best of friends.

------------

Daphne was in Karen’s room, the birthday girl’s mother. They were snacking on a plate of fries Karen had secretly taken from the living room. “Thankfully, everything went well without us having to step in.” Karen said.

“I was David and Emily’s babysitter for years. I would recognize them no matter what they were wearing. Even if it was pretty dresses.” Daphne added. “Being alone watching TV isn’t suitable for any child. You must be very proud of Emily.” Karen smiled as she took another handful of fries. “Of course, I always put my heart into taking care of them.” Daphne replied.

“Well, what should we do with this?” Karen asked as they looked at a hanger holding a light blue dress with white ribbons and a bow at the waist. Next to it were silver shoes with a floral design. Both items had a small yellow note that read ‘For Donation.’

They both fell silent, thinking. “Who knows, maybe we’ll find another girl to give it to. On the other hand, Avi’s parents are quite the party-goers… so…” Daphne explained “… nothing is stopping AVI from attending Emily’s birthday party.” Karen continued. “This time, I’ll make sure to give her a better hairstyle.” Daphne concluded. They both giggled while stuffing themselves with fries.

A ti te quedará perfecto.”

“Quien sabe, tal vez encontremos a otra niña a quien obsequiárselo.
