Emily and David's parents were heading to the woods to spend an afternoon with friends. However, neither of the children were invited. Emily was going to a friend’s birthday party, while David would stay home alone, watching TV, which made him feel sad.

Emily went to her friend’s house to show off how lovely she looked in her new dress, but she noticed her neighbor was feeling down, so she asked him why. David explained that he felt lonely and was on the verge of tears, but his friend hugged him. Emily thought about how she could help him, and then an idea came to her.

“David, do you want to come to my friend’s birthday party?” she asked with a smile. “But it’s only for girls.” he responded sadly. “Don’t worry, I have a solution. There’s still an hour before they come to pick me up for the party. Let’s go to my room.” Emily said. David smiled and followed her.

Once there, Emily pulled out a box labeled ‘Old Clothes’ from under the bed. She took out a pink dress and said “I’ll dress you up like a girl, you’ll look beautiful.” David hesitated for a moment. “I don’t know… I shouldn’t, it’s just…” He was about to continue, but Emily rolled her eyes and interrupted. “Don’t worry, it’s not like anyone will notice. TRUST ME.” She assured him.

David thought about it and decided to trust her. Emily laid out an outfit on her bed. “First, put these on,” she said, holding up an item of clothing. “These are tights, they’re very comfortable when it’s cold. All pretty girls…” she paused to point at herself and then at David. “WE WEAR THEM.” The tights were white with a diamond pattern.             She helped him put them on, as he had no experience with them.

“Now this. It was my favorite dress, but it doesn’t fit me anymore. It will fit you perfectly.” After putting the dress on him, she handed him a pair of pink shoes, which he put on by himself without any trouble. Emily stepped back to admire her work. “Hmm… I’m missing something… I KNOW!” She took his hand and led him to one of her dressers. From there, she took out a small pink lipstick, which she had bought at a store for a very low price.

“Do this, OOO.” she instructed, making a circle with her lips. He imitated her, allowing her to apply the lipstick. “Good, now smack your lips together.” He obeyed. “It tastes like strawberry.” he said with a smile. Emily was increasingly satisfied with her work.

Next, she put a necklace with a pink butterfly around his neck, then some earrings. “You don’t need pierced ears for these. They’re clip-ons.” she explained as she attached them. “Your hair is a bit long, but just a little brushing will do.” Emily said as she sat her friend on the dresser and started using a brush.

“I was supposed to get a haircut today, but my parents went on a forest expedition instead.” David explained. “That’s actually good. It matches this occasion perfectly.” Emily took a ribbon and tied it in David’s hair, making a bow just like her mother had taught her so many times.

“All done, let’s go to the mirror.” Emily and David walked over to the wardrobe mirror. “Aww, you look beautiful, Avi.” She said, her eyes shining. David was surprised, then smiled and giggled. “I look so pretty… no… I, AVI, LOOK PRETTY.” he said, overjoyed. “I told you so.” Emily added. This time, Avi hugged Emily. “Thank you for not leaving me alone.”

The two friends struck poses in front of the mirror until they heard the doorbell ring. They went downstairs to find the birthday girl’s aunt, who was picking up the guests. “Hi, Daphne, this is Avi, a good friend of mine. Can she come?” Daphne looked surprised at Avi for a few seconds.

“I don’t see why not.” The three of them got in the car and chatted about school, the neighborhood, and things Emily made up, with Avi going along with it.

For a moment, Avi’s heart skipped a beat when they picked up another girl, who was a classmate of both of them at school. However, she didn’t recognize him at all, which gave him more confidence, and now he felt much more cheerful.

When they arrived, they went to the living room with the other girls, who were just about to start the usual party games. Emily stayed by Avi’s side, introducing her and sticking with her, like the best of friends.

Daphne was in Karen’s room, the birthday girl’s mother. They were snacking on a plate of fries Karen had secretly taken from the living room. “Thankfully, everything went well without us having to step in.” Karen said.

“I was David and Emily’s babysitter for years. I would recognize them no matter what they were wearing. Even if it was pretty dresses.” Daphne added. “Being alone watching TV isn’t suitable for any child. You must be very proud of Emily.” Karen smiled as she took another handful of fries. “Of course, I always put my heart into taking care of them.” Daphne replied.

“Well, what should we do with this?” Karen asked as they looked at a hanger holding a light blue dress with white ribbons and a bow at the waist. Next to it were silver shoes with a floral design. Both items had a small yellow note that read ‘For Donation.’

They both fell silent, thinking. “Who knows, maybe we’ll find another girl to give it to. On the other hand, Avi’s parents are quite the party-goers… so…” Daphne explained “… nothing is stopping AVI from attending Emily’s birthday party.” Karen continued. “This time, I’ll make sure to give her a better hairstyle.” Daphne concluded. They both giggled while stuffing themselves with fries.
