----- Part 2 – At the Nuptial Estate -----
-- Written by “Gale Kepler” and
“Irene Naridza”
The woman stepped out of the room for a moment
and returned immediately with a tiara made of fabric flowers. She placed it on
her feminized nephew’s head and adjusted his hairstyle a bit. “Perfect. You look PERFECT.” she said with a sparkle in her eyes.
“That… is that me?” he asked. “Of course, it’s you. Adelaida.
That beautiful girl is you.” his
aunt replied with a smile. “It can’t be, but a
moment ago I was a boy.” he said in disbelief. “Well, you’re still a boy, but for this occasion, let’s
pretend you’re a girl, okay?” his
aunt asked with a smile.
“Fine… Wait a moment…
Why didn’t Domenica become the flower girl?” He remembered that his cousin seemed available. “She’s already the ring bearer. She can’t be both.” his aunt explained. “Oh…
okay.” he said, realizing there
was no turning back. “By the way, what’s with
‘Adelaida’?”
“It’s your name for
the wedding. You’ll be Adelaida, my distant niece. So, memorize the name, okay,
dear?” his aunt explained. “Alright, Auntie.
I’ll be Adelaida… just for tonight.”
Pedro began repeating the name in his head over and over, to make sure
he wouldn’t forget it.
Mercedes went to get her purse to leave and
left the door open. “Adelaida, YOU LOOK SO
BEAUTIFUL. THAT DRESS IS GORGEOUS.” Domenica squealed as she entered
the room. Her cousin blushed slightly. “Yours is
beautiful too.” Pedro replied. Domenica
was wearing a dress just like her cousin’s, except hers was pale pink with
sheer shoulders.
“THANK YOU SO MUCH.” she squealed again. “Mom bought it recently. She wanted me to look fabulous.” she said, looking at herself in the mirror with
excitement. She also noticed Pedro’s reflection. “Mom
also bought your dress a while back. It was supposed to be for me, but it’s
smaller. Since the store didn’t accept returns, Mom kept it.”
“Alright, girls. Time
to go to the wedding.” Mercedes said, peeking through the
door with her purse. She had put on her jacket and high heels. Her daughter
jumped with excitement, while her new niece nodded silently.
Adelaida, Domenica, and Mercedes got into the
family’s car, a semi-new black sedan, very different from the truck the family
had until a few years ago. The girls sat in the back, singing along to the
bachata songs playing on the radio.
Pedro found his situation curious. Dressed as a
pretty girl while sharing a good time with his family. His face faintly
reflected in the car window reminded him that he was now Adelaida. He smiled
slightly, as he liked that reflection.
The houses of the neighborhood started thinning
out, turning into trees and fields of the rural area. They arrived in a place
where the trees were more abundant. Mercedes turned down a side road until they
reached a gate with a sign.
“Naridza Estate.” Adelaida read softly. She recognized
the name from radio ads. It was an estate rented for various types of events.
Mercedes parked next to a couple of cars at the foot of some tall trees.
As soon as they got out of the car, a woman
approached them. “Mercedes, there you are.” said
a woman wearing a yellow dress, the same color as Mercedes’. “Hi, Lizbeth. You look radiant.” Mercedes said. The two women greeted each other
with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. They started talking about the wedding, the
bride, and how the other bridesmaids were helping her get ready for the big
moment.
Domenica took Adelaida by the hand and led her
along. “Wait… shouldn’t we stay with your mom?”
Adelaida asked. “No, she’s the maid of honor.
She’s in charge of helping the bride get ready.” Domenica explained.
“But don’t worry, we
can do other fun things here, like talking to the other kids.” she added. That idea didn’t sit well
with Adelaida. She hurried her pace as her cousin was practically dragging her
along. On the way, they saw a few guests. That seemed odd to her since in the
weddings she had seen in movies or in the family photo album, there were
usually a lot of people.
“Is the wedding going
to start soon?” she asked her cousin. “Yes, it should
start shortly. My mom had to bring us and do her friend’s makeup before we
could start.” Domenica explained.
“Then why are there so few people?” Adelaida’s expression changed, her joyful look
dimmed a bit.
“My mom told me that her friend doesn’t get along very well with everyone in her family. It’s because she disappointed her parents with her college career.” she explained in a low voice. “That’s sad.” Adelaida replied.
They walked a bit more until they ran into
another girl, who was in a wheelchair, but she seemed very entertained flipping
through a comic book about a superheroine. She noticed someone approaching and
looked up.
“Hi, Cecilia. We’re
here.” Domenica said. Cecilia immediately smiled when she realized it was her
favorite friend. “Domenica, I’m so happy you came.” she
said, standing up as best as she could and hugging her friend. They stayed like
that for a few emotional seconds before letting go.
Then, the girl in the wheelchair looked at
Adelaida, not recognizing her. “Who is she?” she asked. “Um, I… I’m Adelaida. Aunt Mercedes’ distant niece.” she
replied, sticking to the story.
Cecilia looked her up and down with a curious
gaze. “Nice
to meet you, Adelaida.” the girl in the wheelchair said, extending
her hand for a handshake. The other girl extended her hand and shook it. “Likewise.” Answered.
“Your dress is really pretty.” Adelaida blushed. “Thank you very much.
My aunt lent it to me. Your dress is pretty too.” she returned the
compliment.
Cecilia wore a melon-colored dress with floral
decorations on the shoulders and a rose adorning the waistband. The skirt
reached her knees. On her left leg, a cast stood out, placed to heal her broken
leg. On her right leg, she wore a black moccasin shoe and a white high sock
that seemed to extend past her knee.
“I heard your mom is
getting married. Congratulations.” Adelaida said. Cecilia smiled warmly. “Thank you so much. I’m so happy my
mom has finally found true love.” all the girls were touched by
the phrase.
At one point, Adelaida found herself staring at
Cecilia’s cast. “By the way, I heard about your
accident. That must’ve hurt.” she
innocently commented. “Yeah, it hurt a lot.” Cecilia replied.
“My fat neighbor came out of nowhere and hit me with
his bike. The pain was so much I couldn’t bear it, I passed out or something
and woke up in the hospital.” she explained. Both cousins
grimaced at the story, as if they could feel her pain just by hearing it.
“And your neighbor?” Domenica asked. “Him? He’s fine.
My mom told me he only got a few scrapes and two nights in jail. I know he’s
not a bad guy, but I’m still really mad at him.” the girl answered. “I’d be mad too.” Domenica
commented. “Me too.” Adelaida chimed in, trying to fit in.
Then, to change the subject, Domenica looked at
the comic book her friend was holding. “Oh,
that’s the ‘Pencil Girl’ comic.” she
said excitedly. “Yeah, it’s the latest issue. My mother bought it for me
before coming here.” Cecilia said, showing it off.
“Wow, let’s all read
it together.” Domenica suggested. “That would be awesome. Let’s do it.” Cecilia
agreed.
Both cousins pulled up chairs next to the girl in the wheelchair, one on each side, and started reading the comic, taking turns. Adelaida read a bit timidly, as it was her first time, but she already knew the story. Her classmates at school talked about it a lot.
The story was about a teenage girl named
Priscilla. She lived in a big city, just like theirs. Evil creatures would
arrive to threaten the city, but Pencil Girl would show up to save the day.
With her magic pencil, she could draw all kinds of objects to help her defeat
the forces of evil.
Adelaida was enjoying the story, so she
gradually started reading it with more enthusiasm. Without realizing it, she
was reading it with the same excitement as her cousin and her new friend. "This story is amazing." said Adelaida excitedly. "Exactly. Pencil Girl is the best." said
Domenica. "When I grow up, I want to be like her." added
Cecilia.
"Are you girls
having fun?" asked Mercedes. The girls were so engrossed in the comic that they
hadn't noticed what was going on around them. "Of
course, we were reading the Pencil Girl comic, it's awesome." replied Adelaida.
"That's lovely,
but the wedding is about to start soon, come on so I can give you all a makeup
touch-up and get you ready for the big event." Cecilia and Domenica were very
excited, but the little girl in the white dress seemed a bit hesitant.
"Is something wrong, Adelaida?" asked Cecilia. Her new friend looked to the side for a moment, but then
returned her gaze with a smile on her face. "Not
at all, let's go, the wedding is about to start." she responded with a big smile.
Pedro no longer had issues wearing the dress
and being Adelaida, as he went unnoticed. But the problem was being in an
environment that was supposed to be just for girls. He didn’t want to be
somewhere he wasn’t supposed to be.
However, his cousin Domenica took his hand and
led him along with them, sharing a warm smile.
