----- Different Reasons: Part 1 -----
-- Written by “Irene Naridza”
The wind
blew a cold winter breeze through the streets. It moved the brown leaves of the
trees that were already starting to fall to the ground. It also moved some
signs from cafes or clothing stores. And most importantly, it moved the long
hair of the women taking a walk down the street.
“Brrr. IT'S SO COLD” complained a little girl holding hands with her mother. She was
shivering a bit. “Isn't your jacket enough for
this weather?” her mother asked,
raising an eyebrow. “Well... it seems it's not” the
girl confessed. She was about to say something else, but her mother
interrupted.
“SEE, KELLY? I TOLD YOU.” She exclaimed victoriously, taking advantage of the fact that they were
far enough from anyone else who could listen and intrude on their conversation.
“Jackets can't completely protect against the cold. You need to wear
more layers,” the woman began to
explain. “In your case, a good pair of tights
would be an appropriate addition to your outfit. They would protect your legs
from the cold, and they would make you look quite cute,” she concluded with a smile.
The woman
continued walking hand in hand with her daughter. The girl felt scolded and
annoyed by her advice. It was evident in the pout she was making. “Mom, this is completely stupid.” she said,
stopping in her tracks, forcing her mother to stop too to avoid dragging her
along.
“Is something wrong, Kelly?” she asked, surprised. “OF COURSE SOMETHING'S WRONG.” she complained. “Well,
tell me.” she crouched down to
her daughter's level to hear what she had to say. “Don't
you see this?” she pointed to the
pink dress she was wearing.
“Yes, it's a very pretty dress. It suits you well.” she replied, giving it a glance. “YES, IT'S A DRESS.” she exclaimed. “MOM, I'M A BOY. AND MY NAME IS KEVIN.” she whispered.
“Yes, I know I did something wrong. But. Don't you think it's a bit extreme
and even a bit stupid to have forced me to wear a dress and take me out like
this to humiliate me?” he was noticeably upset. “Don't you think
you're omitting some information?” his
mother said seriously. She took the boy by the hand and forced him to sit on
the nearest bench.
“Look. What you did. It wasn't just wrong. It was cruel” she began to scold him. “You got your sister's freshly washed tights dirty because
you were playing in the dirt. You know they're her favorite and she loves to
wear them. What did you do when she complained?” she gave him a stern look, expecting an answer.
Kevin tried to look away.
“You got angry, got them dirty again, and told her she was ridiculous
and dressed ridiculously. The mud stain got deeply embedded, and now they won't
be ready for tomorrow. Why did you do that? I didn't raise you that way.” she said, disappointed.
“I'm sorry, mom. I did it without thinking. It won't happen again.” he apologized, keeping his eyes on
the ground. “You already said that at home,
young lady.” his mother said, maintaining her stern voice. “That's why I brought you out like this.”
Kevin gave
his outfit another glance. It was a pink dress with hearts embroidered on the
skirt. Red shoes completed the outfit. He also wore a wig of long, straight
hair. It was attached by small threads to his short, boyish hair.
“It's one of Kelly's favorite outfits, the real Kelly.” Kevin remembered his sister's
malicious look while selecting the outfit. “Was
it so people would laugh at me for being dressed as a girl?” he asked in a low voice to avoid drawing
attention.
“That was your sister's intention, but actually. I had something else in mind.” The answer left him perplexed. She didn't rule out the idea of humiliation, but rather left open another possibility. “Then, why?”

Writer’s Opinion ---------------
- This is a three-part short story. I was
thinking a lot about whether to make it a single Caption. But I realized that
it would be better to do it in three parts. I hope you like it.
